Entry and e-visa

The e-visa costs US$25 for a single entry and US$50 for multiple entries, valid for up to 90 days. Apply at evisa.gov.vn or thithucdientu.gov.vn, the two addresses the Immigration Department's FAQ gives, and write your name exactly as it is on the passport. The Department's own site, immigration.gov.vn, also has an e-visa application page.

Before you pay for an e-visa, check on the Department's own page whether your passport needs one at all.

How to apply

Fill in the form in English with complete and accurate details; the Department refuses applications with dishonest information. Pay the fee through the portal's payment gateway with the application, then receive the e-visa online, by email or on the portal's home page.

Mistakes

  1. Applying on an unofficial site. The FAQ names two addresses, evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn.

  2. Leaving out your middle name. Give surname, middle name and given name exactly as on the machine-readable line of the passport, in capitals.

  3. Applying from inside Vietnam. E-visas are for people outside the country. After you leave you may apply for a new one.

  4. Hiding an old violation. You must declare the trips of the past year and any past violations, in full; leaving one out can lead to refusal.

  5. Forgetting to show the e-visa at the desk. The FAQ describes a traveller with a 90-day multiple-entry e-visa who was let in under a visa exemption without showing it. Present the e-visa and check the residence stamp in your passport. A unilateral exemption gives a 45-day stay (Law 23/2023/QH15, Article 31), so a shorter stamp is the thing to catch.

  6. Declaring every hotel on a tour. You declare only the first address on the form. After you enter, each place you stay declares you to the authorities.

  7. Planning to take a job. Per the FAQ, a foreigner who works in Vietnam needs a work permit or a written confirmation that none is required (Labor Code). The e-visa does not replace either.

Unofficial pages may charge unauthorised fees, so a total above the table's figure is a reason to check the address you are on.

Border gates

An e-visa works only at the border gates the Government has approved: 15 airports, 27 land crossings and 39 sea ports on the official list. You may leave through a different gate from the one you entered. The airports, with the city each serves (the city is our addition):
